SANDOWN MILL
The Old Mill at Sandown
the picture shows the old Sandown Mill as it stood in its working day; erected in 1787 to produce flour to the public at a reasonable price, as shipping demands had caused flour prices to rise; The mill was worked by Messer’s Chitty. But it stood derelict for many years.
It was one of several mills in Deal and was demolished after falling into decay;
In the foreground are seen bathing machines of the late Mr. Cattermole, beyond is the "Good Intent" or " Castle Inn " since rebuilt as the "Sandown Castle" hotel, quite a good portion of Sandown castle can still be seen, while at the side of the mill is the millers house ( long occupied by a Mr. Gillett, the manager,) Many years ago in front of the house, was a model of the windmill, in the large meadow now built upon, to the west of the mill site, between Sandown Road and Golf Road, were run in former years, the Deal Races. The course covered by horses was approximately a mile long.

THE TIME BALL TOWER
Originnaly the Lloyds Signal Station, the Time Ball tower, at the top of Sondes Road is Where my grandmother "Edith Maud Hayward" was born, she married George Skardon, my grand father. Her Father, Isaac Gammon Hayward being a watch maker, lived in the Time Ball tower and it was also his job to operate the time ball when required.
He was the son of Isaac Gammon Hayward, the boatbuilder , in Wellington Road, but unlike his brother Harry Hayward, he didn't want to follow his father in the boatbuilding trade.
The Hayward's were famous for building the now extinct Deal Lugger and Cat boats, as well as many smaller craft.
Situated between Sondes Road and South Street, could be found a slipway made from Cobble stones, this was used to launch the newly constructed boats, giving easy access to the sea. This, sadly was destroyed during the building of the new sea wall, which sits along the location, this sea wall again has been extended further seaward, a dull and dismal sight for the keenest of eyes to look upon.
Isaac Gammon Hayward was at one period Mayor of Deal, and during his time in office always made sure that the poor had something to eat at Christmas, by giving them what he could.
