My grandfather was mentioned by the king in dispatches in the 14/18 war for gallantry and bravery during the Gallipoli conflict, he had , on arrival been allocated to run soldiers and stores ashore, his first trip saw him supplying the cook with meat and victuals, on delivering the goods, he was just about to return to the ship when a shell hit the cookhouse and blew everyone up, a very lucky escape. He was then transferred to take wounded to the hospital ships which were under heavy fire, braving the shell fire and returning time after time to rescue more wounded, for this he was mentioned for his gallantry.
He also served in Naval warships as a trimmer and was involved in the Battle of Jutland again

My father like his father before him followed the fish line, all being involved in selling fish. I have spent many days on my bike out in the country, helping dad on his fish round. In the Autumn herrings were landed in great quantities, from which dad used to have several boats landing to him, these were made into bloaters and kippers boxes of them were shipped all over the country. I’ve spent hours spitting and skilling herring as a child, and loved doing it. He also had a farm from which poultry and pigs were reared for the public table, as well as growing veg and fruit, and owning boats on the beach

Keenly interested in music, he founded a band that became known as Skardon's North Deal Band, which was engaged for various social functions and aso played in the streets of the Borough and the villages.
